I just graduated with my MFA in Creative Nonfiction where I made a graphic memoir thesis and focused on comics. I have also been laughed at and made fun of. Workshops can be brutal. Find mentors who you can lean on when the going gets tough. Sometimes you only need one person who believes in you to push you through the hard parts. And be that person for yourself always! Remember your why! You got this!
Thank you so much! I'm trying to make a comic for my thesis project too, but not sure if this is the right place to work on it. It's cool to hear that you did that!! How did your thesis presentation for your graphic memoir go?
I'm considering applying for an MFA in creative writing and I constantly oscillate between whether it's something I want or not. Grad school feels like a black hole from the outside- like what actually happens there?? The most helpful bits of information are from people who are honest about their experiences, how it helps and how it may hinder, and this comic is a wonderful example of that. Thanks for sharing!!
Good luck with the decision! It's hard one to make. I don't regret it, and I am definitely becoming a better writer because of it, but it's a hard balance between what you know your writing needs versus what other people want your writing to become. Very delicate line to walk!
What a lovely and heartfelt comic … I hope your next year at your MFA is much brighter, and if it isn’t, well at least you’ll have something to write about :)
This is spot on. My MA in art education destroyed my confidence, but opened up a Pandora’s box of angst and fueled my art making and teaching with reckless creativity.

Oh hell yeah!! I love that outcome!
